Learn more →Torrox Pueblo's elevated position and surrounding agricultural landscape create a very different pest environment to the coastal resorts below. The older stone-built properties, traditional cortijos and rural fincas on the outskirts provide extensive harbourage for rodents, wasps and a range of crawling insects, while the irrigation channels that water the citrus and avocado groves breed mosquitoes throughout the warmer months.
Properties that are occupied only seasonally are particularly vulnerable — long periods of vacancy allow infestations to establish without detection. Historic buildings with exposed timber beams, traditional tiled roofs and thick stone walls can harbour wood-boring insects and roof-nesting pests that cause significant damage if left untreated.
Torrox Pueblo sits about 4 km up the valley from the coast. It shares the mild climate Torrox is famous for, but it is a working village surrounded by farmland, and its pests reflect that.
The steep streets around Plaza de la Constitucion and the Church of Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion are lined with old houses that have cellars, internal patios and long-established drains. American cockroaches live in these older drain systems and come up through floor gullies and patio drains on warm evenings.

The Torrox valley is planted with avocado, mango and citrus, watered by a network of irrigation channels and ponds. Fallen fruit feeds a large rat population that moves towards houses when the fruit runs out, and the standing water breeds mosquitoes from spring right through to autumn.
